Dr. Ganapathy Sivakumar, Bioengineering, ABI, presented a plenary session invited talk and poster, "Air Lift Balloon-Type Bioreactor: Platform for Commercial Production of Plant-Based Small Molecules and Tissues," explaining laboratory-scale bioreactor production of high-tech phytopharmaceuticals, including natural resveratrol analogs from plant root culture platforms. Dr. Sivakumar also addressed developing simple downstream-processing technologies necessary for cost-effective recovery of phytomolecules for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. The talk was co-authored by Dr. Maureen Dolan; ASU PhD student Jose Condori; Selester Bennett, Nature West, Inc.; Loretta Bacchetta, l'Energia e l'Ambiente (ENEA), Italy; and Dr. Fabricio Medina-Bolívar.
