Food Science is not just about cooking or nutrition. Food Science is SCIENCE!
Did you know that food scientists are working for NASA?
Did you know that many Food Science graduates are well prepared to pursue law school, vet school, medical school, or graduate studies in various fields?
Food Science is the most recently developed program in the College of Agriculture & Technology. Food Science is an exciting multidisciplinary study in which biology; chemistry, nutrition, physics, and engineering are used to understand the nature of foods, the causes of their deterioration, and the principles underlying food processing as well as converting raw materials into safe foods and beverages.
Many students are uninformed about this exciting field of study. The need for trained food scientists has grown in recent years because of increasing consumer interest in safe and nutritious foods. With a degree in Food Science, you may choose from a wide variety of jobs in the food industry or government. Because of the high demand for food scientists, most graduates quickly find employment within the food industry. Well-known food companies, as well as state and federal government agencies such as U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food & Drug Administration (FDA) hire at various degree levels. The starting salary for food scientists in 2003 was $40,000, and the median salary across the industry was $73,150. Food Science graduates are well-grounded in the basic sciences and may pursue further studies in various fields, including law or medicine.
If you are interested in foods, nutrition, and public health, or if you simply enjoy studying different fields of science then Food Science is a program for you!
