The Centennial Faculty Wall honoring the first 100 distinguished faculty members in Arkansas State University’s history was unveiled April 5, 2010 at an afternoon reception in Centennial Hall in the Reng Student Services Center/Student Union. The wall is part of ASU’s continuing Centennial Celebration, and the ASU Faculty Association hosted the reception. Photos of the reception may be viewed by clicking here and on the Alumni website.
The name of each distinguished faculty member was included on a wall plaque placed outside Centennial Hall. The wall plaque was designed by Mark Reeves of ASU’s Publications and Creative Services department and produced by Gibson Sign Mart of Jonesboro.Dr. Beverly Boals Gilbert, president of the ASU-Jonesboro Faculty Association ad hoc committee and professor of teacher education, welcomed the crowd to the event. Opening remarks were made by Dr. Robert L. Potts, chancellor of ASU-Jonesboro. Following Dr. Potts was president emeritus of ASU, Dr. Eugene Smith who reflected upon members of the faculty who taught during his years as a student and during his employment at ASU.
Dr. John D. Hall, professor of psychology & counseling and chair of the ASU-Jonesboro Faculty Association ad hoc committee on the Centennial celebrations & projects, explained the nomination and selection process, the establishment of a tradition and the role of the faculty. The nominees were required to be a retired faculty member with a minimum of 10 years of service, except in unusual circumstances and were also required to have made long term significant contributions to ASU. Dr. Hall said, “One of the main goals of the Centennial is the commemoration of our shared past and also the establishment of new legacies and traditions for the second century of teaching, scholarship and professional service. "We commemorate our shared past by honoring the first 100 distinguished faculty." The Faculty Association will follow a similar nomination and selection process every five years to add additional distinguished faculty.
The names of the first 100 distinguished faculty members were announced by Mr. Michael Doyle, general manager of ASU’s public radio station KASU-FM, while Dr. Beverly Boals Gilbert presented certificates to the faculty member or faculty family member or representative.
