Homecoming

Arkansas State University students celebrated Homecoming 2010 with a week full of events sponsored by the Student Activities Board.

Costume ContestentsMonday morning activities begin with students participating in a “Show Your Spirit Banner Competition” and a “Dr. Seuss Themed Costume Contest”. Students ended the day with a “Homecoming Step Show” at 7:00 p.m. in the Convocation Center.

“Relay Games on the Lawn” began at Noon on Tuesday on the Heritage Plaza Lawn, Student Union. Students also began casting their votes for the Homecoming King and Queen.

ASU Dr. SuessTalented ASU students competed in the Window Painting Competition held Wednesday afternoon in the Center Court of the Student Union. The judging of the Painting Competition at 5:00 was followed by a 7:00 p.m. “To Think I Saw It at ASTATE” Variety Show, held in Riceland Hall, Fowler Center.

Thursday afternoon saw the ASU students gathering at noon for a “Game Show” on the Heritage Plaza Lawn. Later that evening a crowd of students gathered on the Heritage Plaza Lawn for the “Yell Like Hell Spirit Competition.” In conjunction with the competition, the Student Government Association and the Student Activities Board hosted a ceremony to dedicate the 2010 Student Time Capsule.

Float CompetetionThe “Float Displays Contest” judging was held on Friday afternoon, just before the Women’s Soccer Game ASU versus Middle Tennessee. Although the Red Wolves fought hard, they fell to MTSU in the second half.

Saturday saw students tailgating at Tailgate City before the homecoming game versus Louisville. Before a homecoming crowd of 25, 219 the Red Wolves were down 31-7 at the break. Halftime featured the university’s Distinguished Alumni recognition and the Homecoming Court. Second half saw the Red Wolves scoring 17 consecutive points, but the Louisville Cardinals turned back the Red Wolves in the final minutes of the game to overcome ASU with a 34-24 victory.

2010 Student Time Capsule Ceremony

Let me hear you HOWL!!!

The opening words a ceremony hosted by the Student Government Association and Student Activities Board for dedication of the 2010 Student Time Capsule held in conjunction with the annual Homecoming "Yell Like Hell" competition.  The event was held at the Student Union Heritage Plaza on Thursday, September 30 at 7:00 p.m.

Arkansas State University launched a new student tradition with the burial of the first student time capsule in 2009.  The Centennial Graduating Class collected items that symbolized 2009 at ASU.  Successive classes will continue the tradition for the next 25 years as a commemoration of years spent at Arkansas State University.

Time capsule dedication

During the past academic year, at the direction of the Student Government Association, seniors gathered items symbolic of their time on campus to be placed in a time capsule.  This capsule will be sealed inside one of 25 concrete benches surrounding the Historic Arch in the center of campus, and it will be opened by class members in 2035 during their 25-year Homecoming Reunion.

Lady Antebellum Concert

ASU Convocation Center celebrated ASU’s 100th Anniversary on Friday, October 1, with a concert featuring Lady Antebellum.  Lady Antebellum was billed as the reigning Academy of Country Music Top Vocal Group of the Year and the Country Music Awards Vocal Group of the Year.  Lady Antebellum cracked the top 10 of Billboard magazine’s all-genre Hot 100 and went No. 1 on iTunes all-genre singles chart.  As part of the Centennial Celebration, 100 V.I.P. tickets were sold that included a commemorative 100th anniversary concert Lady Antebellum autographed-chair.

ASU Alumni Centennial Homecoming Activities

ASU AlumniThe 2010 Arkansas State University Centennial Homecoming schedule for ASU Alumni Association included an All-Alumni pre-game tailgate party at the Cooper Alumni Center, recognition of the outstanding Distinguished Alumni at halftime of the football game; reunions, alumni seminars; luncheons; tailgate party featuring the Crowley’s Ridge Cruisers classic car rally; a 5th Quarter Party at the Brickhouse Grill, downtown Jonesboro, and activities by academic colleges.  You can view photos of the ASU Alumni activities by clicking here.

The academic colleges hosted several events on Saturday, October 2:  The ASU College of Business hosted its annual alumni breakfast at the Cooper Alumni Center to honor the Business Executives of the Year.  An alumni seminar event at the ASU TV Studio and a tailgate party at Tailgate City was hosted by the College of Communications.   Hosting a panel discussion about teaching in the 21st century was the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.  The College of Nursing and Health Professions sponsored their annual distinguished alumni awards and open house at the Donald W. Reynolds Center for Health Sciences.  The College of Sciences and Mathematics and the College of Agriculture and Technology sponsored tailgate parties on Saturday afternoon at Tailgate City.

Strong-Turner Alumni Chapter

S-TACThe Strong-Turner Alumni Chapter, a chapter of the ASU Alumni Association focusing on African-American alumni and friends of the university, celebrated Centennial Homecoming 2010 with a S-TAC golf outing at Sage Meadows Golf Course; an S-TAC social at the ASU Pavilion; its annual Honors Luncheon in the Hames Room of ASU Convo Center honoring the African-American contribution to ASU’s first hundred years, with pioneering namesake Frederick Turner in attendance; and a S-TAC alumni dance held at Church Street Station, downtown Jonesboro. Centennial Celebration Finale

The Centennial Homecoming Weekend culminated with the Centennial Celebration Finale on Sunday, October 3, in Riceland Hall, Fowler Center.  Featuring the premier performance of “Dear Mrs. Caraway, Dear Mr. Kays,” a dramatization by Dr. Nancy Hendricks, director, alumni communications and performed by Hendricks as Hattie Caraway, and Mike Doyle, station manager, KASU 91.9 FM, portraying V. C. Kays. This dramatization was followed by Dr. Tom O’Connor’s new musical composition, “Architects of Fate.”   Both works were commissioned especially for ASU’s Centennial Celebration.
