All across the globe, the ability to communicate in more than one language is providing college graduates an increasingly stronger competitive edge in the job market. As interdependence comes to dominate our economic, social, and cultural relations in the world today, the need for multilingual communication skills and a comprehension of world cultures becomes more and more critical. The decision to become multilingual opens your door to an infinite array of possibilities.
The Department of Languages also offers a minor program in French, among others, which will serve as an excellent complement to a degree in any field. A minor in French or one of the other minors we offer, provides you an understanding of these cultures' historical and contemporary significance, and facilitates development of proficiency in their languages.
The minor in French requires 18 credit hours of course work, the elementary and intermediate I courses do not apply to the minor requirements (the requirements can be viewed by following the link above). Several study abroad opportunities are available for students pursuing a minor in French or one of the other minors that we offer.
In accordance to recent studies, the demand for bilingual workers is on the rise in almost every line of work; speaking a second language makes you a valuable asset to your future employer. Particular high in demand are bilingual workers in health care, hospitality, education, law enforcement, customer service, social services, finance and international business, and communication. If your academic major is associated with any of these fields, please see an advisor in the Department of Languages regarding adding a minor in French or one of the several others that we offer.
The Department of Languages provides a solid support structure for students pursuing a degree or minor in French. The department offers tutoring support services free of charge in French and invites students to participate in our weekly conversation gathering, Le Cercle Français, as well as in the many intercultural activities offered on campus throughout the year. French majors are highly encouraged to study abroad for a summer, semester or full year. We currently offer programs to France at the Université de Cergy-Pontoise, near Paris. Most financial aid applies, and the cost may be about the same as studying at the Jonesboro campus.
