 Admissions Requirements
Admissions Deadlines:
Fall - July 1, Spring - November 15 

  • Students seeking admission into the Master of Arts degree program in Sociology must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School and the specific program requirements.
  • In addition, applicants must have completed a minimum of 18 undergraduate semester hours in Sociology with a grade of B or better in each course including courses in Social Theory, Methods of Social Research, and a statistics course with a statistics lab.
  •  A student must have a minimum cumulative undergraduate average of 3.00.

    Degree Requirements
    Students are required to take at least 30 hours of course work for the MA in Sociology.

    Required Courses (6 hours)
    SOC 6303  Contemporary Sociological Theory  
    SOC 6343  Methods of Social Research

    Choice of the Following (6 hours)
    Thesis Option: SOC 6706-6  Thesis                                       
    Internship Option: SOC 6603  Internship and 3 hours of Sociology electives
    Electives Option: 6 hours of Sociology electives

    Electives (18 hours)
    12 hours must be in Sociology and 6 hours may be taken outside of sociology with approval of advisor (exclusive of deficiencies)

    Additional Requirements

      • Students must either complete and successfully defend a thesis or take and pass a comprehensive examination
      • A knowledge of one foreign language demonstrated by successful completion of coursework with a grade of C or better or by achieving a satisfactory score on an examination is required for the Master of Arts degree in Sociology. Coursework in a research tool area (such as statistics) with a grade of B or better may be substituted. Research tool substitution must be approved by the department, and language or substitute tool courses cannot be credited toward completion of degree coursework requirements.
      • The foreign language or research tool requirement must be met before the comprehensive examination can be taken.
