What is Criminology?

Criminology is the sociology-based study of crime and the criminal justice system. The criminology and criminal justice studies major exposes students to the dimensions of the crime problem, explanations of the prevalence of various types of crime, and the various agencies and programs designed to prevent and control crime and delinquency.   What skills do you learn in Criminology?
Working in the criminal justice system requires a number of skills. The criminology major provides, among others, the following:

Conduct Research and Analyze Data:  Learn both qualitative and quantitative research methods.  This will allow you to recognize trends and patterns and produce social statistics such as those used in many criminal justice fields.

Communicate Skillfully:  Learn how to convey your ideas effectively in writing and presentations.

Practice Critical Thinking: Learn to look beyond the surface of issues to discover the "why". Build your analytical skills. Solve problems and identify opportunities.

Prepare for Graduate School :  An undergraduate major in criminology provides an excellent foundation for graduate study in a wide range of fields including law, business, social work, medicine, public health, public administration and, of course, criminology/criminal justice.
