Interdisciplinary Family Studies
Homeland Security and Disaster Preparedness

Interdisciplinary minors intersect several disciplines and promote shared knowledge. Moreover, interdisciplinary minors prepare students for a world where careers increasingly bridge a wide spectrum of academic disciplines. The College of Humanities & Social Sciences offers several interdisciplinary minors: African-American Studies; Cognitive Science; Interdisciplinary Family Studies; Modern European Studies; Medieval Studies; Religious Studies; Women & Gender Studies; and International Studies. As the world continues to change, interdisciplinary minors help students move beyond the confines of traditional academic disciplines and focus on cultural and gender diversity, multiple ways of knowing, spirituality, and the discovery of new knowledge.

Interdisciplinary Family Studies

The family studies minor allows students to study family life in conjunction with their major area of emphasis.  Understanding families has become critical in recent years, especially for individuals entering health professions, social services (such as social work), education, and the humanities/social sciences. Increased emphasis by social scientists on the family make this an engaging and dynamic minor area of study.  This program is relevant for students interested in health professions, social work, psychology, sociology, criminology, liberal arts, social sciences, and education.

Homeland Security and Disaster Preparedness

The minor in Homeland Security and Disaster Preparedness is a multidisciplinary program offered in the College of Nursing and Health Professions and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The structure of the minor provides specialized training within each of three tracks. The introductory and capstone course provide the common framework necessary for the integration of these fields and the cooperative efforts of the specialists working within them.
