  Chair's Message

igive CSG’s enrollments continue to flourish.  Our largest program, BA Criminology,   experienced the most significant growth.  From academic year 2007/08 and 2006/07 the number of criminology majors increased from 180 to 192, a 6 percentage point increase.  Our graduate programs continue to prosper and demonstrate growth as well.

CSG is on the go.  We’re moving!  On Saturday, September 13, 2008, Governor Mike Beebe presented ASU-J with a $4 million dollar check for the new Liberal Arts Building.  The estimated cost of the building is $20 million.  The College of Humanities and Social Sciences and CSG will take up residence there.  The Wilson Building, CHSS’s current home, prominently displays the architectural rendering of our new building.  An atrium warmly greets faculty, students, and staff and natural lighting is abundant.  The third-floor of the four-story complex houses CSG.  The new Liberal Arts building offers a plethora of theater-style seating, computer laboratories and smart classrooms, and space for peer advising and career development.

We need your HELP!  In spring 2008 CSG Graduate Assistants solicited a record number of pledges through the university’s Convocation of Callers.  Proceeds from the Convocation of Callers go to the CSG Foundation account and supports student and faculty travel to professional conferences, aids in research design and implementation for undergraduate, graduate and faculty research, equipment, field experiences, and food for departmental and extramural social events.

Let’s make next year a banner year by making a contribution to the foundation when frisky graduate students and enthusiastic faculty call upon YOU for our help.  We can do better with you support.

New computers will improve CSG’s dated computer laboratory.  Twenty-five new computers with the Windows Vista operating system will grace the computer lab.  Computer software and applications will include SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), ArcGIS (geographical mapping software used widely in the social sciences), and the full Microsoft suite.
