Careers Using Languages

CAREERS USING LANGUAGES

Knowledge of a world language is a marketable skill

Language abilities open career prospects in many areas of government service, business, and education, and can lead to chances for travel and higher pay.

Combine proficiency in a language with other skills for even more career opportunities. Consider a double major or a minor in another field.  Or go for more than one language!

Some examples of job involving knowledge of a world language:

  • foreign correspondent
  • interpreter/translator
  • travel professional/tour guide
  • public relations representative
  • international or trade lawyer
  • human resources director
  • import-export agent
  • international student advisor
  • social worker
  • drug abuse counselor
  • immigration officer
  • foreign policy analyst
  • diplomatic service personnel
  • nurse
  • customer service specialist

And, of course, teacher.  (Arkansas and the United States as a whole have a shortage of qualified world language teachers.)

Currently there is a high national demand for speakers of the three critical languages that we offer here at ASU: Arabic, Chinese, & Swahili. Check out the following link to find a wide array of job opportunities with these languages and more:

PLUS—learning another language strengthens your knowledge of English, your memory, your critical thinking skills, and your cultural awareness.  Good communication and analytical skills are highly prized and rewarded by employers in many fields.

So what can you do with a world language?  Anything you want!
