The College of Communications combines a foundation in the liberal arts and sciences with a core of professional courses to prepare students to succeed in communications. The college offers master's programs in mass communications and communication studies. It has undergraduate programs in these departments:

• Communication Studies, which includes programs in communication studies and health communication;
• Journalism, which includes emphases in advertising, graphic communications, news-editorial, photojournalism and public relations;
• Radio-Television, which includes emphases in broadcast journalism, electronic media sales and promotion, interactive digital media and video-audio production.

The college is certified by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications for its undergraduate programs in journalism and radio-television. ACEJMC reaccredited the college in May 2009 after a two-year long process that included an intensive self study and evaluation by a team of educators and media professionals. The college was found "In Compliance" for all nine ACEJMC standards and received unanimous support for reaccreditation. The Council accredits 114 schools in the United States and outside the country. The Council conducts voluntary reviews for schools with professional journalism and mass communications programs.

ACEJMC requires that graduates of accredited programs:

• understand and apply the principles and laws of freedom of speech and press, including the right to dissent, to monitor and criticize power and to assemble and petition for redress of grievances.
• demonstrate an understanding of the history and role of professionals and institutions in shaping communications.
• demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of groups in a global society in relationship to communications.
• demonstrate an understanding of professional ethical principles and work ethically in pursuit of truth, accuracy, fairness and diversity.
• understand concepts and apply theories in the use and presentation of images and information.
• think critically, creatively and independently.
• conduct research and evaluate information by methods appropriate to the communications professions in which they work.
• write correctly and clearly in forms and styles appropriate for the communications professions, audiences and purposes they serve.
• critically evaluate their own work and that of others for accuracy and fairness, clarity, appropriate style and grammatical correctness.
• apply basic numerical and statistical concepts.
• apply tools and technologies appropriate to the communications in which they work.

The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC) invites all students, faculty, staff, administrators and other persons to report incidents in which they can present evidence that the college or ACEJMC has violated accreditation standards, policies or procedures. Such complaints must be made in writing and addressed to President, ACEJMC, 109 Stauffer-Flint Hall, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS 66045.

Complaints must be accompanied by documentation showing a specific, substantive violation of one or more standard, policies or procedures. ACEJMC does not adjudicate, arbitrate or mediate individual faculty or student grievances against a school; nor does it act as a court of appeals in individual matters of admissions, appointment, promotion or dismissal of faculty, staff or students. In considering complaints, ACEJMC will give careful attention to due process for both the complaint and the school.
