The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS, also known as medical laboratory scientist, or MLS, and medical technologist, or MT) has an understanding of the underlying scientific principles of laboratory testing, as well as the technical, procedural, and problem-solving aspects. The scientist has a general comprehension of the many factors that affect health and disease, and recognizes the importance of proper test selection, the numerous causes of discrepant test results, and ethics. The scientist understands and enforces regulatory requirements and safety regulations, and uses statistical, business, and economic data in decision-making. The scientist also has an appreciation for the roles and interrelationships of other healthcare professionals, and has a basic understanding of the principles of educational methods, management theory, and information management.
