Make sure that you get advised early. Most problems students encounter is when they are wanting to have their holds released for the fall and they have waited until the summer. Many faculty do not work during the summer, so you may not be able to meet with your advisor. Make sure that you meet with your advisor during the spring to have your fall advising hold released. Do NOT wait until summer! Another problem that often happens is students wait too long to be advised and then the courses they need are already full.
Make sure you contact your advisor, not another faculty member who is not your advisor. If you do not know who your advisor is check on Banner or in Jonesboro you can check the Advising Center Bulleting Board on the third floor of the Education Building. If you do not have an advisor contact Mrs. Stark at vstark@astate.edu or call her at 870-972-3436.
Email your advisor to set up a time for advising. Give your advisor a chance to respond to your email. Often advisors are speaking at conferences, may be on sabbatical or may be on vacation. After a reasonable amouint of time and you have not heard back from your advisor, contact the office.
Changing advisors is normally not done. If you have documented evidence that you are having problems with your advisor a request to change advisors may be made. An email stating the rationale and documented evidence to support the rationale should be directed to the Department Chair or the Assistant Chair.
When you meet with your advisor, bring a copy of your current unofficial transcript and a list of the classes that you think you should take during the next semester.
Make sure that you follow all prerequisites for courses you are registering for,
Keep a file of important documents. The file should include:
your checksheet
Evaluation of Transfer Work (if applicable)
approved Request for Transfer Credit form(s) (if applicable)
hold release forms
official transcripts of all transfer work for all college/universities coursework other than what has been completed at ASU-Jonesboro
any relevant correspondence that applies to advising
all verification letters indicating you have passed different checkpoints, e.g. letter stating that you have been admitted into the Teacher Education program
