Tips for Advisors

Here are some tips for meeting with advisees:

Keep an advisee file. The file should include:

  • checksheet
  • Evaluation of Transfer Work (if applicable)
  • hold release forms
  • the last ASU-Jonesboro unofficial transcript the student provided for you
  • official transcripts of all transfer work for all college/universities coursework other than what has been completed at ASU-Jonesboro
  • any relevant correspondence that applies to advising

If you have a student wanting to be advised make sure that the student is your advisee. If not, refer them to their own advisor. If they do not know who their advisor is refer them to the Advising Center Bulleting Board (Jonesboro) or to Banner to determine who their advisor is. If they do not have an advisor refer them to Vicki Stark, so one can be assigned.

When advisees set up a time to meet with you for advising ask them to bring a copy of a current unofficial transcript and a list of the classes that they think they should take next.

During the meeting update the checksheet using the unofficial transcript

During the meeting check to make sure they follow the checksheet as much as possible and that they meet prerequisites before suggesting they take a particular class.

If a hold release form has been completed, ask the student to turn it in to Vicki Stark in ED 345. It will be returned to you to be filed when the hold has been released.
