ASU-ASCE STUDENT CHAPTER NEWS
The Arkansas State University ASCE Student Chapter competed in the Deep South Conference at Mississippi State University on March 25 and 26, 2011. Other universities attending the conference include University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), Louisiana State University (LSU), University of Memphis, University of New Orleans, University of Louisiana Lafayette, Louisiana Tech University, University of Tennessee-Martin, Southern University and A&M College, Jackson State University and Christian Brothers University. The student chapter entered six competitions at the conference: Concrete Canoe, Steel Bridge, Technical Paper, Concrete Bowling Ball, Mystery Event and the Surveying Competition. The students placed in the top three in four of the six events to earn the Overall Conference Title. They placed first in the Concrete Bowling Ball competition, second in the Steel Bridge Competition and the

ASU ASCE Student Chapter
Technical Paper competition, and third in the Concrete Canoe competition. Other placements include fifth in the Mystery Event and seventh in the Surveying competition. The Concrete Canoe Team placed third in the Oral Presentation and Design Paper. In the paddling events, the team placed third in the women’s sprints, fifth in the men’s sprints and women’s endurance, sixth in the Co-ed sprint and seventh in the men’s endurance. The Steel Bridge team placed first in the Efficiency and Stiffness categories, second overall and in the Display and Lightness categories, and third in the Construction Speed and Economy categories. Their performance has earned them a spot to compete at the national competition at Texas A&M this May. The ASCE chapter worked hard all year and their efforts showed at the Deep South Conference this year. The team has three graduating seniors and students ranging from freshman to seniors.
