Program Requirements
The purpose of the M.S.E. degree in Special Education - Instructional Specialist 4-12 is to offer educators an advanced performance-based program of study based on the recommendations of professional organizations and accrediting associations such as the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and NCATE. Students completing this program gain expertise in teaching students exhibiting developmental, learning and behavioral disabilities, and in consulting with general education teachers who have students with disabilities in their classrooms.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted, applicants must have submitted a completed admission application and a nonrefundable $30 application fee, inclusive of the following:
1. A valid teaching certificate
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least
2.75 on a 4.00 scale for all courses (completed, attempted and repeated) or a 3.00 GPA on the last 60
undergraduate course hours (completed, attempted and repeated)
3. Official transcripts sent from the registrar of the college/university attended to the Office of Academic
Partnerships
4. Proof of selective service registration (males aged 18-25 only)
5. No record as a felon or sex offender
6. Two years of teaching experience. For Special Education or Gifted & Talented Licensures, two years of
teaching experience in your area of choice is required. Print and complete the Years of Teaching
Experience Verification Form located on the website above.
7. A written commitment from a practicing building-level administrator who will function as your mentor during
the degree program/program of study. The written commitment must be in the form of a letter on
school/district letterhead, signed by the mentor. Find out about mentor qualifications and responsibilities

Up to 9 graduate hours from ASU-Jonesboro or other higher education institutions may be accepted toward this program. However, no course can be more than 6 years old at the time of graduation. Before enrollment in this program, transfer hours must be submitted to:
