Dr. Erik Gilbert Program Director Professor Email egilbert@astate.edu
Program Description The program is intended to respond to the growing need for teachers at both the High School and Community College level who are trained in the “New World History.” The proliferation of Global history courses at both the High School and College levels, and the introduction of the new World History AP exam, has created a need for teachers at both levels with training not just in non-Western history, but also with an understanding of the main themes and approaches that the best world historians are bringing to their research and teaching. In addition to course work and the option to write a thesis, students in the program will have the opportunity to teach a section of World History under the supervision of a professor. Students who intend to pursue a Ph.D. will also find that this program prepares them to do further graduate study.
Admission Requirement Applicants must have completed at least 21 undergraduate semester hours in history including three semester hours of freshman-level world history and nine semester hours of upper-division world history. Students who have not taken an undergraduate historiography course will be required to take HIST 6213, The Practice of History, which will not count toward the 30 semester hour degree requirement. Applicants for the M.A. in History, Global History emphasis, will be evaluated by the department for academic qualification based upon their undergraduate academic record and letters of reference. Students must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School.
Holders of the M.A. in History from ASU or another accredited graduate program may apply up to 15 hours of earned credit from a previous degree program to the completion of this degree, provided that those credits were earned within the 6-year limit for completion of this second degree.
Deadline: Fall - July 1 and Spring - November 15
