Program Description
The Department of History offers a 30 credit hour Master of Arts (M.A.) with emphasis on Public History. The student is required to take 12 hours of U.S. History, 12 hours of Public History and 6 hours of Thesis or Internship. Those who did not take the Practice of History as undergraduates, will have to take this course on a graduate level for additional credit hours. The Department will allow up to 15 hours of earned graduate credit hours to holders of an M.A. in History degree from Arkansas State University or up to 6 credit hours from another institution.

Admission Requirement
Applicants must have completed a minimum of 18 undergraduate semester hours in History in addition to three semester hours of freshman level World Civilization and three semester hours of sophomore-level United States History (both are considered to be part of the general education requirements). Students who have not completed a research seminar will be required to complete HIST 6213, The Practice of History. Students who have not completed a historiography course will be required to complete HIST 5303, The Idea of History. Neither of these courses will count toward the 30 semester hour degree requirement. Applicants for the M.A. program in History will also be evaluated by the department of academic qualification based upon their undergraduate academic records and letters of reference. Students must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School and the specific program requirements.

There is no foreign language requirement for the Master of Arts degree in History. Students who plan to pursue the Ph.D. degree, however, are encourage to complete the intermediate level of a foreign language.
