Children's Books

Juvenile Collection

The Juvenile Collection serves as a resource for ASU faculty, students, student teachers, staff and the community.  Materials in this room are collected to support the Education Department curriculum.

Because this room is not staffed, we have attempted to make locating materials as easy as possible. If you need assistance, please ask at the  Information Desk on the 2nd floor.

There are several types of information hosed in the Juvenile Collection for different levels of readers and each has their own unique call number designations and are on separate, well-marked shelves..  They are as follows:

Easy

(E) Mainly picture books and beginning readers geared toward Pre-K through 3rd grade.  shelved alphabetically by the last name of the author. All Easy books have an "E" at the beginning of the call number before the author’s last nam

Fiction

(F) Generally above a 3rd grade level. All Fiction books have an "F" at the beginning of the call number before the author’s last name.

Biography

Books about real people, all reading levels. Biographies (B) are shelved alphabetically by the last name of who the book is about with a "B" before the subject’s last name.

Non-fiction

Factual books of all reading levels. Non-fiction is shelved according to the Dewey Decimal System, which is grouped by subject and the call numbers begin with numbers, not letters.

Curriculum Collection

Teacher preparation materials, textbooks, resource guides & activity books. The Curriculum Collection materials have their own unique call number syster and are placed along the back wall of the room.

Award Winners

Caldecott, Newbery, Coretta Scott King and Pura Belprè award winning books placed on a separate shelf, as they are very important children’s book awards.

Big Books

Oversized books, both Easy and Non-Fiction located in two large boxes on the floor on either side of the entrance.

Readers

Graded fiction and non-fiction books primarily intended for ESL students but available for all.  Readers are shelved along the back wall of the room, next to the back door.

There is a Research Guide on Children's Literature and the Juvenile Collection which explains how to find the books you need in the collection using the library catalog, as well as an in-depth explanation of how the call number systerms work.  It also lists some of the library's education databases and related websites.

All items in the Juvenile Collection may be checked out.  Please see the Library Circulation Policies for more information.
