 Archeology 2011

Archeology Event Honoring Native American Culture invites visitors to “Peek Into The Past” at ASU Museum

The Arkansas State University Museum and the Arkansas Archeological Survey are hosting a free archeological event in the main museum gallery on the Jonesboro campus, March 12th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Special activities include the identification of Native American pottery, stone tools, and stone points by professional archeologists.  The purpose of this identification is to learn more about the age, function, and cultural meaning of objects that have been found throughout our region:  the archeologists will not appraise, authenticate, or perform conservation. Bring any artifacts—this is a great opportunity to learn about the people who lived here hundreds, or even thousands, of years ago.

Ancient Native Americans crafted pottery vessels for use in cooking, storage, and for ceremonial and spiritual purposes.  Visitors to the Saturday event will have the opportunity to “play with clay” and experience the techniques used by ancient people.  Katie Carnahan is a regional potter with expertise in traditional pottery-building methods and she will be on hand to guide children and adults through coil and slab techniques.  Firing will not be provided.

Additional activities include a special tour geared toward young archeology enthusiasts that will offer a unique perspective on effigy pots; and HiSTORY TIME, a storytelling session for young children.  Not to be missed is Portals of the Soul, an exhibition that features the early history of Native Americans in northeast Arkansas and showcases the exceptional ceramics that were crafted locally.

This is a great family event with something of interest for all age levels.  The ASU Museum supports lifelong learning and encourages families to play together and learn together.  For information on Archeology-themed birthday parties, visit http://museum.astate.edu.  Regular hours are Tuesday, 9 a.m.–7 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sunday 1–5 p.m.  Admission is free although donations are gratefully accepted.  For more information visit the ASU Museum website or call 870-972-2074.
