Autumn in Arkansas History Tour NEW TRAVEL CLASS! (Saturday, October 24, 2009, 7 a.m.-7 p.m., $40 per seat, Instructor/Guide:  Judy Blevins)  Enjoy fall foliage, photo opportunities,  historic sites, museums, shopping and good food all in this guided instructional tour class.  You'll learn a bit of Arkansas history, some pioneer skills that are relevant for today and see a native tribal dance exhibition.  Explore north central Arkansas in a day filled with new friends, food and fun.  Transportation, guided tours and admissions fees for tour stops are provided.  Bring your camera, a sack lunch, and money for dinner.  All class reservations must be prepaid by Friday, October 23, and participation forms (click here) must be completed to enroll in class.  Departs from ASU-Paragould.  (Print Flyer)

Dream Pillows  (Thursday, October 29, 4-5:30 p.m., $25, Instructor:  Dee Lindsey)  Learn how to make these herbal sachets that release aromatherapy while you sleep.  Dream pillows support relaxation to help you fall asleep.  Makes a great gift or craft party idea.  Age 12-Adult.  Sweet dreams!  Instruction sheet provided.

Hebrew, Level III (Tuesday, October 6-November 10, 6-7:30 p.m., ASU-Jonesboro, $45, Instructor:  Dr. Doug Wheeler) Prerequisites are Hebrew I and II. 

Organic Skin Care:  Making Herbal Cosmetics  (Thursday, October 22, 2009, 4-6 p.m., $40, Instructor:  Dee Lindsey)  Learn to make your own natural cosmetics with herbs and treat yourself to refreshing, organic skin care.  Make and sample products in class and experience how ingredients containing fresh herbal properties can be incorporated into your health regimen.  Bring a towel and makeup remover or come make-up free for best results.  Recipes provided.  Age 12-Adult.

Aromatherapy Bath Blends  (Saturday, November 7, 2009, 1-3 p.m. $40, Instructor:  Dee Lindsey)  Sample and learn how to make your own bath products with herbs and fresh ingredients for personal enjoyment or gift giving.  You'll remember to thank yourself when bath time becomes a spa with these relaxing, soothing blends.  Learn to make home recipes for muscle aches, tension and aromatic treatments. 

December 2009

Emergency Survival 101   FREE!  (Date/Time TBA) How can you prepare your household for a tornado, ice storm, earthquake, flood or evacuation?  What does it take to be prepared for virtually any emergency situation?  Learn what to expect in a variety of natural disasters and what you can do to prepare for such an event.  Every household should have an emergency survival plan and preparation kit.  Sponsored by ASU Community Education and the Craighead County Office of Emergency Management (CCEM). 

Holiday Wreath Workshop  Topiary! (Saturday, December 5, 2009, 10-12 p.m., $75, Instructor:  Dee Lindsey, ASU-Jonesboro) Registration and payment deadline is November 25, 2009, to order supplies.  Just in time for the holidays!  You'll make the most unique wreath of the season, using a selection of fragrant herbs, soil and sphagnum moss tucked into a wire wreath frame.  The end result?  A beautiful, living center piece of greenery that will fill your home with fresh aroma throughout winter and continue into the New Year.  This spectacular show piece can hang on a door, wall or be grown on your kitchen counter.  Your friends will be amazed!  Step-by-step instructions and supplies are furnished to complete your project.  Please bring scissors or pruners and gloves to class.  Remember to wear craft clothes or bring an apron. 

Stock Market for Dummies NEW! (Wednesday, December 2, 2009, 1-3:30 p.m.)  If you've wanted to understand how the stock market works and how to trade stocks, this course lays a simple foundation on how to get started and do it yourself.  Learn the basics that every amateur should know and have a hands-on opportunity to learn how to open an on-line stock account to begin trading.  Unveil the mystery of investing. 

January 2010  

Acting for the Community Theater  (January 7-February 11, Thursday, 5-6:30 p.m., $95, Instructor: John F. Michael, ASU-Paragould)  Learn the basics of acting theory, movement, voice, interpretation and performance through fun exercises geared toward those who wish to become involved in local community theater.

American Sign Language, Level I (January 19-February 25, Monday & Thursday, 5:30-6:30 p.m., ASU-Jonesboro, $59, Instructor: Dewey Boone)  Learn how to communicate using ASL in this class that meets twice a week to help your learning curve.  No experience is necessary.  Students will build their sign vocabulary with a focus on communicating with others.  Adult-12 years welcome. 

American Sign Language, Level II (January 19-February 25, Monday & Thursday, 6:30-7:30 p.m., ASU-Jonesboro, $59, Instructor: Dewey Boone)  Builds on Level I communication skills by expanding vocabulary, developing sentences and expanding conversational sign.  Meets twice a week.  Prerequisite is American Sign Language, Level I or some previous signing experience. Adult-12 years welcome. 

Computing for Seniors Book Included! (January 8-February 12, 6 weeks, Friday, 10-11:30 a.m., ASU-Paragould, $85, Instructor: Deanna Harris)  Learn to use a personal computer as an important part of your life with step-by-step instructions.  Learn the basics of sending/receiving e-mail and pictures, shopping safely on the internet, on-line banking, writing letters, storing files, playing music and games, using picture images and more.  This is a great starter course for any computer novice.  No experience necessary. 

Digital Photography, Intermediate (January 6-February 3, 5 weeks, Wednesday, 6-8 p.m., $105, ASU-Paragould, Instructor:  Karole Risker) Advance your basic photography skills and master techniques and special problems that make your photos look like the pros. This class builds on Digital Photography I.  Students should have basic camera skills. 

Hebrew, Level I, Language Basics (January 12-February 16, 6 weeks,Tuesday, 6-7:30 p.m., ASU-Jonesboro, $45, Instructor:  Dr. Douglas Wheeler) Three advancing levels of this class will be offered throughout the year.  No experience is necessary.  Learn the basics of the Hebrew language, beginning with the alphabet, vowel points and basic reading.  Students will begin reading Hebrew in the very first class.  This class will also introduce an understanding of using Hebrew to do word studies of the Bible.

Spanish for Medical Professionals  (January 11-February 15, 6 weeks, Monday, 6-8:30 p.m., $145 and textbook is provided.  Instructor: Dr. Yvonne Unnold, ASU-Jonesboro)This course is approved for 15 contact hours of continuing education credit.  This is an intensive six-week course, which meets once a week for 2 1/2 hours to learn the necessary terminology to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking patients.  The course is accompanied by an interactive, on-line study tool that allows the student to practice skills and vocabulary outside the classroom and extend the learning experience beyond the course period.  This course is suitable for practitioners, paraprofessionals, staff and services groups in the medical professions who desire to develop their Spanish communication skills in the workplace, who need a refresher course or who desire to practice their language speaking skills.  No experience is necessary.  Level II is available upon enrollment demand. 

February 2010

Acrylic Painting Techniques ALL LEVELS! (February 6-27, 4 weeks, Saturday, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., $49, ASU-Jonesboro, Instructor: Luci Murray) Explore painting with acrylic in a fun environment.  Experiment with creative techniques on paper and canvas board.  Learn the basics of color, design and composition or expand your knowledge base with a variety of new techniques and ideas. Supplies available for the first class. After the first class, students should purchase their supplies. Adult to age 12 welcome. Skill levels vary.  No experience necessary. 

Basket Weaving  Kit included! (February 13, 2009, Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., $55, ASU-Jonesboro, Instructor:  Heather Runyan) Learn the ancient art of basket weaving. Everything you need is included in this workshop for beginners.  No experience is necessary.  The instructor guides participants every step of the way to weave a basket for personal use or gift giving.  Adult-12 years welcome.  ASU-Jonesboro Campus, Registration deadline is January 27, 2010 to order student supplies.

Green Living: Highway to Natural Health (February 2-March 9, 6 weeks, Tuesday, 6-7:30 p.m., ASU-Jonesboro, $49, Instructor:  Amanda Yates)  Learn to live a naturally healthy lifestyle with friendly foods, natural remedies, herbs, green cleaning, organic cosmetics and other alternative household green products.  Find out what you need to know to organize a natural first aid cabinet, what herbology, homeopathic medicine and essential oils are all about, how to understand product labels and how foods affect moods, behaviors and more.  If you want a more healthy lifestyle, this class is for you! 

Spanish for Medical Professionals  Textbook provided!  (February 10-March 17, Wednesday, 6-8:30 p.m., $145, Instructor: Dr. Yvonne Unnold, ASU-Paragould) This course is approved for 15 contact hours of continuing education credit. (See January listing.)

March 2010

Hebrew, Level II, Translation & Word Development  (March 9-April 13, 6 weeks, Tuesday, 6-7:30 p.m., $45, ASU-Jonesboro, Instructor:  Dr. Douglas Wheeler)  This class builds on Hebrew Level I.  Hebrew II students will further develop grammar to assist in more advanced reading and understanding of Hebrew text in the Bible and to formulate interpretations in the Old Testament based upon the Hebrew roots.

Organic Vegetable & Herb Gardening (TBA, 6 weeks, ASU-Jonesboro & Paragould, $59, Instructor:  Dee Lindsey)  How does your garden grow?  Organically and without weeds, when you learn how to make  natural fertilizers and pesticides.  Let a master gardener walk you through how to plant and tend your garden, including soil preparation, planting, cooking with your fresh produce, harvesting and preservation.  Next, learn how to plant and tend an herb garden, including how to design an herb bed, what plants to select, how to get started, cooking with herbs, and even a brief introduction on making crafts, teas and home remedies with herbs.  If you want to garden green, this class gets you started in time for spring planting.  No experience required.  Adult to age 12.  

April 2010

Acting for the Community Theater  (April 1-May 6, 6 weeks, Thursday, 5-6:30 p.m., $95, Instructor: John F. Michael, ASU-Paragould) Learn the basics of acting theory, movement, voice, interpretation and performance through fun exercises geared toward those who wish to become involved in local community theater.

Digital Photography, Introduction  Book included! (April 28-May 26, 5 weeks, Wednesday, 6-8 p.m., $105, ASU-Paragould, Instructor:  Karole Risker) Capture fall colors when you learn how to take better photographs in this introductory course to photography. Students will learn the basics of composition, lighting, using camera settings, and a brief introduction to Photoshop.  Some outside coursework will be involved as students will take photographs between classes.  No fancy camera is needed!  Just come with what you have.  The Digital Photography Book, by Scott Kelby is included in the cost of the class.

Summer 2010

Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People  Piano Shorthand! (Wednesday, August 4, 2010, $55 plus a $25 material fee for a 32-page book and 68-minute practice CD, ASU-Jonesboro, Instructor: David Haynes) This 3 1/2 hour workshop teaches you to play the piano instantly by looking at chord symbols in popular music, instead of reading all the notes.  It's music shorthand that produces instant success using both hands, even with total beginners!  If you've always wanted to learn to play by chords, this class will start your learning in a flash.  Ages 14-Adult. (This piano shorthand does not work with classical music.)

Vocal Techniques for Community Singers (TBA, 6 weeks, 6:30-7:30 p.m., $45, ASU-Jonesboro and Paragould, Instructor: Lynn Williams) This class is designed for community singers who are looking for more from their vocal performance.  Grow your singing success during this 6-week course that teaches concepts, voice exercises and techniques to improve your sound and delivery.  No experience necessary.
