Family Members and Visitors:

As your son or daughter begins a new stage in their life, it is important that you are aware of the services and programs available to assist with their personal, career and professional development. Parents can assist by taking an interest and asking questions about their daughter/son’s career management process.

Elements of Career Management You Can Assist With:

  • Visit the Career Management Center and Counseling Center when you visit campus. Schedule a time to take a career inventory in the Counseling Center while on campus.
  • Register your student with Career Connect an electronic resume and job posting system where they will find work study, part-time on and off campus jobs, and full-time and internship employment.
  • Explore their skills, interests and values.Take a Career Assessment .
  • Suggest that your student use SIGI 3. An online career assessment and exploration tool available 24/7. They will have access upon being enrolled at the university and receive their ASU student ID number.
  • Take an active interest and ask career related questions.
  • Talk about your job and what you like and dislike about your job.
  • Talk to friends, supervisors/managers, and acquaintances that might be willing to allow your son/daughter to participate in an informational interview or job shadowing experience Job Shadowing/Information Interviewing
  • Encourage your son/daughter to seek summer employment related to their interested career field.
  • Strongly encourage your student to participate in at least one internship if not more.
  • Always remember it is normal for a student to change their mind about a major or career.
  • Encourage your son/daughter to participate in experiential learning opportunities such as: faculty and student research, study abroad, student exchange, and an internship.

Undecided About a Career Field or Changing Majors?

  • If your student is undecided, encourage them to visit the Career Management Center or the Counseling Center to discuss career plans.
  • Also visit Wilson Academic Center, To schedule an appointment to speak with an acedamic advisor about a major.
  • If undecided about a major visit “What can you do with this major ?”
