Today's technology driven economy demands graduates who are qualified for a variety of jobs. Arkansas State University fully understands the concept of "career pathways" and is committed to providing a program intended to build on a student's associate degree curricula, work experience, and maturity. The Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree is designed to allow students who have completed technical career training via an Associate of Applied Science or other similar associate degree to apply their entire associate degree (excluding remedial or developmental courses) toward the requirements of a bachelor's degree.
The degree provides a liberal arts background focusing on communication and problem-solving skills, global issues, mathematics, sciences, humanities and arts. Additional core coursework addresses organizational theories and practice, technical competencies, management of human and material resources, quality assurance, industrial safety and other industrial/business needs.
The program is individualized through the student's selection of an emphasis in such areas as industrial manufacturing, industrial relations, food science and technology, computer systems and computer aided design, and other approved areas. Students will participate in a capstone practicum supporting their chosen emphasis.
As appropriate, students may apply certain certifications of their previous work or training experiences toward degree credit by submitting a portfolio for evaluation to the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Committee. Up to 15 hours of PLA credit may be awarded.
Many courses are available online. Other emphasis areas and core courses to serve other career interests are being planned.
