Blackboard Troubleshooting Tips


Student Troubleshooting Tips:

I. Check your browser version by clicking here and use one of the following recommended options:

  • Windows XP Service Pack 3. Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.13, Java version 1.6.0_15
  • Vista, Internet Explorer 7.06002, Java version 1.6.0_15
  • Vista users should add blackboard.astate.edu to the "Trusted Sites:
  • Install the current version (1.0.4.13) of Respondus LockDown Browser from the Software Downloads page here.

If you are NOT using Respondus for testing, the following applies:

  • Safari 4 on Mac
  • Safari 3.* on Mac
  • Safari 4 on Windows

II. Always clear cookies and cache prior to starting an exam.

III. Online exams require a direct line high speed internet connection. Disable your wireless adapter prior to beginning an exam.

IV. Close all other applications prior to beginning an exam.

V. Use the following link to verify your version of JAVA and update as necessary: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

VI. If you do not see the course in which you are enrolled, verify with your instructor that the course has been made available.

Faculty Troubleshooting Tips

I. Do not check the force completion box

II. Do not use the timer

III. Do not use “prohibit backtracking” with question randomizer

IV. If students indicate they do not see the course and/or your courses say “Unavailable”:

  1. Open Blackboard and select your course.
  2. Click on Control Panel.
  3. In the lower left hand box of options labeled COURSE OPTIONS, select SETTINGS.
  4. From this list, select COURSE AVAILABILITY.
  5. Click on Yes to Make the Course Available.
  6. Click on Submit.
  7. Click on OK.

Known issues:
Internet Explorer 6 consistently produces problems when taking exams with or without the Respondus Lock Down browser.


Internet Explorer 8 has produced problems on an inconsistent yet frequent basis when taking exams.

Current testing scenarios indicate the most reliable results are achieved using the following when taking a test in the locked down environment:
